Max Angus is a painter and printmaker. Born in Mortlake, London and now living and working in Kent.

“Originally, I came from a painting and strong graphic drawing background.  The painterly qualities of oil and mark making can express more than just colour and outline alone. At college, I attended a printmaking course covering many different types of printing and etching. I found in the linocut printmaking, it used the strong graphic outlines with qualities of evenness of tone and rich blacks that could not be achieved by any other medium.

I produce small print runs of original linocut prints, generally fewer than twenty to each edition. Every print is hand printed and each one is unique.

I currently live in a small village in Kent, near the coast. My work is often inspired by the environment around me from the village trees to Mr Peep the cat. Additional inspiration comes from off season trips to North Norfolk to see the migrating geese and coastal bird reserves. I maintain a sketchbook to record ideas and the moments in everyday life, that could easily be forgotten. In my studio, my sketchbook then becomes the catalyst for my next series of work.

I have been influenced by the inspirational artists of the 1930s, Ethel Spowers and Sybil Andrews. Who lead the way in linocuts as a printing medium capturing their everyday lives.”
